The body remembers.

The nervous system can carry experiences in posture, breath, sleep, tension and urgency.

Some memories are not only stories. Ask someone about a difficult period of their life and they may give you a fluent account — dates, events, even insight. And yet their shoulders are up around their ears, their breath is shallow, and they have not slept properly in years.

The body can carry experience through tension, shallow breathing, sleep disruption, vigilance, shutdown or exhaustion. This does not mean the body is failing. It may mean the nervous system learned something important in a difficult context — and never received the message that the context has changed.

Understanding

Two kinds of memory.

Neuroscience gives us a useful distinction here. Explicit memory is the kind we usually mean by the word: conscious, narrative, filed with a date. *That happened, then, to me.*

Implicit memory is different. It is the body's learning — procedural, emotional, wordless. It holds how to ride a bicycle, and it also holds what danger felt like, what footsteps on the stairs meant, what happened when you relaxed. Implicit memory has no timestamp. When it is triggered, it does not feel like remembering. It feels like now.

This is why a person can know, completely and sincerely, that they are safe — and still brace when a door slams, still scan every room for exits, still feel their chest tighten on Sunday evenings for reasons they cannot name. Knowing we are safe is not always the same as feeling safe. The two kinds of memory are kept in different registers, and insight alone does not transfer between them.

Understanding

The nervous system's logic.

The autonomic nervous system — the machinery beneath awareness that runs heart rate, breath, digestion and alertness — is constantly asking one question: *am I safe?* It answers not with thoughts but with states.

When it detects threat, it mobilises: the fight-or-flight surge of tension, urgency and vigilance. When threat feels inescapable, it can do the opposite and shut down: numbness, fatigue, fog, a sense of being far away from life. And when it detects genuine safety, it settles into the state where rest, digestion, connection and play become possible.

These responses are not choices, and they are not character. A person living in chronic mobilisation is not "highly strung"; a person living in shutdown is not "lazy". Their systems are running old protective programmes — brilliantly, and at great cost.

Understanding

What the body may be carrying.

The signals are often ordinary enough to be missed. Jaw tension and grinding at night. Breath held without noticing. Startling at small sounds. Exhaustion that sleep does not repair. An inability to sit still — or to get up. Digestive trouble with no clear medical cause. The habit of positioning yourself where you can see the door.

Each of these, on its own, means little. As a pattern, they can be the body keeping an old promise: *I will not be caught out again.* Posture can carry it too — the curled shoulders that once made someone smaller, the readiness in the legs that once meant escape. The body remembers not to hurt us, but to protect us, using the best information it ever received.

Understanding

Triggers are memory in action.

A trigger, understood this way, is not weakness or oversensitivity. It is implicit memory firing with perfect accuracy at the wrong target.

The nervous system stores the sensory signature of danger — a tone of voice, a quality of silence, a certain kind of look — and reacts to any close-enough match in the present. The reaction is instant, full-bodied and utterly convincing, which is why "you're overreacting" misses the point so completely. The person is reacting exactly proportionately — to something that happened years ago. The overreaction is only an overreaction if you assume the body is responding to now.

This reframe changes the question we ask ourselves after a disproportionate reaction. Not "what is wrong with me?" but "what does this remind my body of?" The first question produces shame. The second produces information — and, eventually, choice.

Understanding

Safety is learned.

Here is the hopeful part: what was learned can be relearned. Not quickly, and not by argument — but reliably, through experience.

Therapy can support the slower learning that happens when the body begins to experience enough steadiness, choice and connection. Every session in which your system starts alert and gradually settles is a repetition of a new lesson. Every time something difficult is approached and you discover you can pause it — that you have a choice — the old learning of helplessness loosens slightly. Every experience of being met without judgement teaches the nervous system the one thing it could not learn alone: that another person can be safe.

This is why trauma-informed therapy pays attention to the body and not only the story. We work with sensation, breath, grounding and pace. We track what your system can digest, and we stop before overwhelm rather than after it. Regulation is not a trick to calm down; it is the gradual widening of how much life you can feel without leaving yourself.

Understanding

Why insight alone is not enough.

This distinction explains one of the most frustrating experiences in personal change: understanding everything and feeling no different.

You can trace the pattern to its source, name the childhood dynamic, read the books — and still brace at the slammed door. This is not a failure of intelligence or effort. It is simply that insight speaks to explicit memory, and the bracing lives in implicit memory. They are different filing systems, and information does not automatically pass between them. The body does not learn from explanations. It learns from experiences — repeated, felt, safe-enough experiences that contradict the old prediction.

This is also why willpower makes such a poor tool against trauma responses. You cannot instruct your heart rate. What you can do is give your system, again and again, the conditions under which it can draw a new conclusion itself.

Understanding

Living with a body that remembers.

Between sessions, small practices help the new learning take root — not as homework to perfect, but as repetitions of safety. Feeling your feet on the floor when the surge starts. Lengthening the out-breath, which speaks directly to the calming branch of the nervous system. Noticing, deliberately, the moments when nothing is wrong — because a vigilant system skips those, and they are precisely the evidence it needs.

The aim is not a body with no history. The aim is a body whose history is no longer its forecast.

People notice the change in small ways first: a full breath arriving on its own, an evening without bracing, sleep that holds. The vigilance that once ran all day begins to switch off when it is not needed. And slowly, feeling safe stops being a rumour and becomes an experience.

If your body has been carrying something for years, it may also be carrying the strength that made that possible. Endurance, vigilance, the capacity to keep functioning under load — these are not nothing. The work is not to discard them but to give them, at last, the option of standing down.

Your body has been keeping faith with an old reality for a long time. It can learn the new one. It just needs to be shown — patiently, repeatedly, in relationship — rather than told.
